“Post-doctoral researcher” means that a scientist has completed their PhD (which gives you the title “Dr” in front of your name). A PhD is a degree that you can do after a BSc, but instead of attending classes and taking exams, it is focussed on doing a research project with the aim of discovering something new about your subject. At the end, you publish a book on your findings! You don’t need a PhD to be a researcher, but it is necessary if you want to go on to become a lecturer or a Professor like me.

Exactly like Carolyn said: I’m a post-doc(tural researcher) now because I’ve finished my PhD a year ago and got lucky enough to get a job in a nice lab to continue to do research on my favourite topic!
