I studied physics at university and didn’t really know what I wanted to do afterwards. Nuclear power companies were taking on graduates at the time so I applied for a few and got a job which I luckily really enjoy. I am dyslexic and really struggled with writing and reading at school, I’ve found a lot of people who work in physics/STEM industry are neurodiverse.
I did a graduate scheme in the nuclear industry and worked for Magnox in safety case, which is the way we make sure nuclear stays as safe as possible.
I enjoy horse riding and have just got my 3-year old to ride a horse!

My job involves training, advising and supporting staff on EdF sites who are involved in any part of transporting dangerous goods in order to ensure all the regulations and rules are followed.
There are very strict rules for transporting radioactive and other dangerous goods in public to ensure they are safe when they are on the road, rail or sea. My team and I travel around the EdF sites to help with any difficult items and talk to the teams on site about how to change procedures or training to make things easier for them.
We use special containers to transport nuclear fuel, called flasks. Here is a video that shows how strong our nuclear fuel flasks are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOVNTcc-vPw

My Typical Day:
If I’m working from home or the office I wake up about 7 and have quick breakfast before starting work at 7:30. I have online meetings with my whole department and smaller teams. I also answer emails and call from people on sites with queries. I have lunch at 12 and work till about 5. I work longish days so that I can fit all my hours into 4 days and have a 3 day weekend.

if I’m visiting a site I’ll stay in a hotel the night before then get to site about 9 ish. Meet the team dealing with dangerous goods on site and then they’ll show us what they are up to on site. There’s usually a few things we can help them to do better or things they are doing well which we can share with other sites. Its important to get to know people on site so (covid restrictions allowing) we might go out for dinner with the team in the evening.
My job also involves keeping the internal and government regulators happy. So I call them every couple of weeks to let them know what big projects we are involved in (such as transporting radioactive material to sweden) and any big changes we’re making.
