Although I trained primarily as an artist, my interest in things medical meant I was always interested in the human body and how it was constructed and how it worked. I find medical science can be integrated with medical art to answer questions in a novel way, I like using using both halves of my brain.

No two days are the same and we are very lucky because we are able to test hypotheses with experimentation!!!who knows what we may discover….

I think the most interesting part of science for me is the opportunity for further investigation. We are always developing new, faster, more accurate techniques or discovering information that nobody knew before which I just find fascinating. The possibility that I could be the first person in existence to ever know or understand something is just cool!

I like that the fact that there is a “yes” or “no” answer to most scientific questions, and that each time you answer “yes” or “no” there is a factual reason why or some evidence to back it up. When I was studying for my first degree I took some optional modules in sociology and psychology, and it used to really irritate me when the answer could be “yes” OR “no”, or both! I was a bit of a trouble maker in the seminars as a result!

I also love the excitement of discovering new things and being able to use complicated lab instruments. Our department at the University of Kent has just bought a fantastic comparison microscope and when I saw my samples under high magnification it was amazing. They looked like little works of art!

With regards to forensic science in particular though, the thing I like the most is that it has such an important part to play in the criminal justice system and in society in general. Whether that’s finding out what happened at a crime scene by looking at the trace evidence, or helping victims and their families get justice/closure for what’s happened, or by exonerating innocent people of crimes they didn’t commit. I would challenge anyone to say that’s not interesting or worthwhile work!

I enjoy the variability in my work, no two days are the same. I love looking at samples under the electron microscope and seeing detail that you cant see with the naked eye. Samples from the natural world are fascinating, as you can see spikes and pores on pollen grains.

I enjoy the investigative nature of science, what will you see? Has anyone else seen or done this before? I also like the fact that some of the work has impact on the real world.

The application of science in forensics is exciting and rewarding… but that is not to say that it can’t be frustrating and repetitive.

Knowing that what I do will make a difference to individuals and society is a big responsibility, but is very satisfying.

I like exploring aspects of science and especially photographing scientific subjects so others can see what I can see or reveal things that can’t easily be seen.

I like lots of things about science! I like that I can try to solve questions relating to real world problems and feel like I am making a difference. I like the variability of my working places, be it out in the field, in the laboratory, in the classroom or visiting another workplace. I like reading about new advances in my field and wondering how I can apply them to my own work. I think science is a good subject if you like solving puzzles.
