Great question! I’m a huge fan of Charles Darwin (I even named my cat after him). He’s famous for developing the theory of evolution, but he was also a geologist and loved fossils! His work completely changed the way we see the world from a place that’s always been the way it is now to one that’s changed over millions of years.
I’d have to say that Rosalind Franklin is quite amazing and didn’t get the credit she deserved! She discovered the structure of DNA (the material that carries information about how we look and function). Her discovery was so important because it lead to a lot techniques used in modern biology today (like DNA fingerprinting for crime scenes). Sadly, Crick and Watson were awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery instead of Rosalind so I think it’s important we remember her today.
One of my favourite scientists is Helen Sharman, she is a chemist and an astronaut! She was both the first British astronaut and the first woman to visit the Mir space station. Since her time in space she has done lots of outreach work, talking to people about both chemistry and spaceflight. I was lucky enough to meet her last January!
Ooh, I have a few. Charles Darwin is one. Mary Anning was amazing. She was a female palaeontologist who discovered lots of fossils on the south coast but as she was a woman, she wasn’t allowed her name on any of her discoveries or allowed to attend scientific meetings despite many male counterparts using her work.
