About Me:
I live in Glossop (close to Manchester) with my wife, two kids and a dog. I have an elder daughter and younger son, both in secondary school.
I like music and movies as well as PC games and enjoy seeing new places – I’m really lucky to have travelled a lot with my job (oh, and science is somewhere in there too!).

I’ve always loved science and taking things apart (and even getting them back together, still working).
I like PC gaming – I can’t seem to get on with a game controller so it’s mouse and keyboard for me (does that make me old?). I like FPS and action/adventure games.
Films? I like lots of types, Marvel, DC, action, comedy, sci-fi and the occasional horror with my daughter (no one else wants to watch that in our house).
Music? Most types but I prefer rock and metal music – although I’ll listen to almost anything. <y wife is Spanish, so we have a LOT of Spanish music going on too.
I was born close to Lincoln, grew up mostly in Grimsby and lived in Seattle (USA) when I was young before moving back.
I went to University in Sheffield, work close to Manchester, but live close to the countryside.
I really like cooking – that’s chemistry with food, I suppose!

My Work:
I am a chemist and work in a science called “Atomic Spectroscopy”. This helps us to measure the elements in all kinds of stuff – important if you don’t want to be poisoned by Arsenic in your food or are looking Gold in rocks!

Atomic Spectroscopy means I measure atoms. Well, almost as atoms are really small so I can’t pick them up and look at them so I use special scientific instruments (machines not musical instruments) to help me out.
We need to measure atoms and elements as they make up everything and are everywhere. Some elements are not very good for us (like lead or arsenic) so we need to make sure the food we eat and drinks are safe.
The elements can tell us loads of information about ourselves and where we live – did you know that there’s a lot of an element called Iridium in a thin layer of soil (if you dig down enough) all over the earth that appeared at the same time the dinosaurs died (that element was in the asteroid that hit the earth and killed them)?
I do less in the lab now but work on making the software (the programs that make the instruments work) better and better.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up and usually have a coffee or tea and do a few video calls to Japan and Australia early in the morning. I’ll go into the office 2 or 3 days a week – sometimes in the lab doing some science or helping my team and customers with the software. I finish work sometimes late, sometimes early, but it’s fun.

I work a lot on the computer now, but that means I can help people with questions on chemistry and in particular the type of chemistry I’m good at – Atomic Analytical Spectrochemistry. Big words but it means I measure elements in “stuff” using special machines called spectrometers.
My main team work in Tokyo in Japan and I am really lucky as I have visited there a lot of times as well as many other places in Africa, Northern Europe (like Norway) and America – all for work and all to measure atoms! There are some great people everywhere in the world and science has brought us all together.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I don’t mind if I never win the prize as I just want to help young scientists as much as possible.
If I did win, I’d like to work with my local school and make some chemistry videos for YouTube on anything fun.
-
Education:
I went to nursery school in Grimsby and then Seattle (in the USA).
Primary school was back in Grimsby in Old Clee School.
Secondary school was still in Grimsby at Havelock School, where I did my GCSE’s (I was in the first year to take GCSE’s) and then A-levels
I then went to Sheffield Hallam University to take a degree in Applied Chemistry, followed by post-graduate in The University of Sheffield on my specialist subject.
-
Qualifications:
GCSE in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Design & Technology, English, German (although I didn’t do well in that), Geography and probably something else I can’t remember.
A-Levels in Chemistry and Physics (I found maths too hard at the time)
Degree in Applied Chemistry.
I now have letters after my name: Glenn Woods BSc(Hons), CSci, CChem, FRSC and am proud to have worked hard for them!
-
Work History:
At school & college:
Delivering newspapers on evenings and Sunday mornings
Bar work (when I was a little older)
University:
I worked in bars and in a food factory preparing fish during my university holidays
I have worked in my current company for 25 years in science/chemistry, and it’s still fun.
-
Current Job:
I use my chemistry to help develop the computer software (programs) that make our instruments work.
I also help give training to help people understand what makes our science instruments work.
I have a few YouTube videos too!
-
Employer:
The company I work for is called Agilent Technologies, they make all kinds of scientific instruments.
