Glenn Woods answered on 15 Mar 2023:
Students need to get involved. Just lectures can be difficult to sit through so having some hands-on experiments is really important – and fun.
-
Jo Ellis answered on 15 Mar 2023:
Showing the practicality of science by demonstrating is a good way, a lot of people learn well with pictures

Arno Kraft answered on 16 Mar 2023:
Experiments. Doesn’t matter whether they are practical or on a computer. Finding out or proving the answer to a question yourself through lab work, or making a compound in a lab is much more fun than hearing about the method in a class or reading about the topic in a textbook.

Martin McCoustra answered on 16 Mar 2023:
I was always interested in how things worked and taking things apart and putting them back together. I remember when I first saw a Rubik’s Cube thinking how cool I could twist it all ways. Before I took it apart to find out how it worked and reassembling in intact with the face each one colour. I think exploring science… really doing it… at home in the kitchen you can get people thinking about science. Baking is a great way to learn science as it is so tied up with measuring amounts of materials and transforming them into something nice eat.

Clara Zehe answered on 16 Mar 2023:
I think incorporating experiments into teaching is a good way because students find it interesting and it provides hands on learning, which helps a lot of students. Also I think encouraging students to participate in science competitions or projects is useful because it allows them to take charge of their own science experiments.

Grace Roper answered on 16 Mar 2023:
I think experiments are the best way. In primary school I remember growing plants in different conditions, and learning about crystallisation with salt water. In secondary school I remember making a pH indicator out of red cabbage. These experiments showed me how science is involved in the world around me, and helped get me excited about science.

I definitely think that experiments are the best way. Have a question, get them to do the experiment, and they can find out the answers themselves.

Christy Sadler answered on 16 Mar 2023:
I like showing student’s different practical demos but also giving people the opportunity to try things out themselves. I tried a few different fields of research during my undergraduate degree and eventually found something I enjoyed and am now doing a PhD in that field!

Maryam Sani answered on 20 Mar 2023:
Students tend to get interested if they are actively engaged in experiments, investigations, and generally any activity where they can relate to the situation. This sparks interest and then can lead to further researching and developing a deeper interest. As a teacher, I would always engage students with hands-on activities or demonstrate some of the experiments that are fun but involve more risks.

Graeme Dykes answered on 24 Mar 2023:
The really cool science does require knowledge and skills first. It is important for students to see how their training leads beyond the classroom. A lot of people find that doing the experiments and seeing how application of knowledge can solve problems, is the most exciting.
