Because the sun has ultraviolet and infrared radiation that both can heat up our eyes and burn them essentially. It’s not the brightness which is the problem, but the amount of light at wavelengths that we cannot even see!

In the eye there are special molecules that respond to light. But if you give them too much light the molecules break down… this is called bleaching.

This can be temporary, and the cells in the eye can repair it. But if the energy is too much then the whole cell can bcome too disorganised to repair.

It is great to look straight at the sun. The sun gives out lots of different types of light. If there is too much of a certain light it can cause damage to the eyes. The bits at the front and the back can be damaged. The bits at the back of the eye respond to light and that is how we see. If you look into a torch you know you get a dark circle, that is only temporary damage to the eye. That is okay as it goes away. Also, fun fact. If you shine a light (like a torch) into a human eye, then a leopards eye, or a different animals, the colour you see (reflects off the eyes) can be different!!!
