About this Zone

Gold! You know what it is: it’s the shiny, yellow stuff which lives in Fort Knox. But did you know that all the gold that was on earth when it was forming likely sank into the core of the still molten baby planet, and out of our reach for ever? So where is the gold on the end of your headphones from? It’s thought that all of it arrived when thousands of asteroids impacted the earth much later on (only 4 billion years ago). That’s right, all gold we have is Space Gold. Let’s hope there’s it wasn’t buried here by Space Pirates…

This is a general science zone, where we will meet five scientists from different areas of science.

There is one scientist studying how stem cells become neurons which will help cure brain diseases, another using beams of molecules to create tiny structures to make smartphones run quicker, and another one helping other scientists understand and fight cancer. There is also a scientist looking at how changes in our DNA might affect sleep, and another person looking at how galaxies are born and live their lives over 13 billion years.
