I liked the idea of being a teacher when I was younger, but I also liked crime books and TV shows. Growing up on a farm made me quite thick skinned when it came to life and death perhaps? But either way I am happy that I seemed to have been able to merge the two. I love teaching, but I love that I get to decide what I teach, how I teach it and continually update the topics I cover. As well as conducting some really cool science with my brilliant PhD students, who are the true superstars.

Oh gosh yes, but only because I hadn’t found forensic science yet!
To be honest, until I switched onto the forensic degree programme at uni, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. I’d had lots of different jobs after leaving school so I had a pretty good idea of what I didn’t want to do though! 😜
At school I thought about being an impersonator, a rocket scientist, a brain surgeon or a linguist. Now, I can’t imagine doing anything other than forensics!!

Your career goal is likely to change throughout your life. At times I have wanted to teach and at other times I’ve wanted to carry out research and also I have wanted to apply my knowledge in a case context. External circumstances can also shape the direction of your career path such as where and when your dream job comes up. Stay flexible and versatile and keep gathering transferable skills such as communication, presentation skills and IT.
