Most of the dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago, long before there were any humans around. Scientists believe that an asteroid the size of a small city hit the Earth somewhere in Mexico. Everything within about 1000 miles of where the asteroid hit would have been vapourised, and tiny balls of really hot glass rained down all across the Earth (it basically rained lava!), setting pretty much everything on fire. In case all that wasn’t bad enough, the impact also threw dust and ash into the air, blocking out the Sun for several years. Because plants need sunlight to survive, most of them died, and so the plant eating dinosaurs that relied them died too. With no plant eating dinosaurs left, the meat eaters died out too. In fact, the only things that survived were small animals that could hide underground and eat the scraps of food that were left.
