It did! What caused the extinction of the dinosaurs is something scientists have debated for a long time, but in the 1980s a group of scientists discovered a crater in Mexico that’s the right age (66 million years old). There’s been a lot of research since then, and lots more evidence has turned up to support the theory.
Scientists think the asteroid was about 10km across, and when it hit the Earth it would have thrown up dust into the air, which blocked out the Sun for several years. This killed almost all the plants, so most of the dinosaurs starved to death in the following weeks and months. The only things that survived were small creatures that could make do with what little food was left. The survivors included small mammals which eventually evolved into humans!
