Hi, thank you for your question. The first thing to say, is that I hope there aren’t many people who describe their jobs as ‘hard and boring’. All jobs will have times where they have a lot of work to do so it is hard, but hopefully most people will find their jobs interesting at least some of the time. It’s true though, that in the harder times, people will tend to feel more stressed. This could be because they are working longer hours or taking fewer breaks. Some jobs, such as those which include working shifts (overnight etc.) may be perceived as more stressful because they disturb sleeping patterns, and sleep can be very important for regulating how stressed we feel!
Definitely. Personally if I am bored I am very stressed – so I need a career that keeps me stimulated hence I chose science. I also like being busy, which may stress others….; and I hate being sat down for too long (which some may prefer). Therefore, as everyone is different and have different interests they will find different jobs stressful…..
Good question. Measuring stress related to jobs is quite tricky.
Some people who are feeling bored in their jobs are actually quite stressed about it. Some people who are really busy and dealing with challenging jobs and lots of pressure just love their work.
Physiologically, we know that working lots of night shifts can be stressful. Also sedentary jobs like driving taxis or sitting at a checkout or a desk all day can be quite stressful too. Often people find working with other people can be tricky and needs good communications skills – relationships sometimes get pressurised.
However, having a job is generally better for people than being unemployed. People who are working tend to be healthier overall.
