John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the youngest ever American president, who really pushed and helped to develop space travel in the 1960s. There are two of his quotes which I really like: ‘The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were and ask “why not?’: this is very relevant to science, as for years people said a man could never run a mile in less than 4 minutes. In 1954, Roger Banister broke that time. Who ever would have thought at the start of the last century a man would ever land on the moon, ye in 1969 Neil Armstrong did exactly that. For big discoveries to happen, you need to think big, and have belief in your own ideas. This is just at relevant in your home and school life too.
He also said ‘One person can make a difference, and everyone should try’. This is an important message in all aspects of life, even just going about from day to day. Smiling at someone and being nice to them can help to cheer someone up if they are down. Chatting to someone about their day, learning about their interests – you might figure out you might be able to help them in some way. In science, you might be one of very few people doing experiments in that area, and even small discoveries can make a huge difference. I think Edison’s quote ‘I haven’t failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that did not work’ is also very apt! Just because something doesn’t work, doesn’t mean you haven’t found anything out in the meantime.
