Ice is most useful after an injury like an ankle sprain or a muscle strain (like when you pull a hamstring), it has a useful role to play in reducing the amount of pain in an area after the injury occurs. Unfortunately, I don’t think it would be able to reduce the pain as much as would be needed from a broken ankle if the bones forming the joint were broken into two or more bits 🙁

The best way to help fix a broken ankle is to listen to the advice of the doctors and physiotherapists looking after you, the joint will usually have a cast put onto it to hold it in place, the bones might have plates put into them to hold the broken bits together until they heal, and you will be told you can’t put any weight on it (so you will get crutches). If you put too much weight on bones that haven’t fixed back together and aren’t healed, then they are likely to break again. Your doctor/physio will tell you when it is OK to put more weight back on the leg and how much to apply, so this is the best way to fix the ankle.

As Laura Anne has mentioned ice wouldn’t be that helpful if your ankle was broken. but ice is a key component of the RICE procedure used to treat soft tissue injuries, such as sprains and strains. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression and elevate. So you should follow this procedure in order to treat a sprain or strain.
