Yes! I wish I had been more focused on my studies earlier! It took a log time before I really discovered the motivation to learn. Once you reach adulthood and go into the world of work, most people don’t have the opportunity or the time to really learn and study things in depth. Whereas at school you have teachers and books available who can really help you to learn things and to discover what it is that interests you most. Teachers and careers advisers may also be able to tell you about the sorts of courses to take that could help you to pursue your interests in the future – so make use of those people and their expertise! I didn’t realise how lucky I was to be in a situation where all I really needed to worry about was developing my knowledge and understanding of the world, and so I think I wasted a lot of time. You don’t get that time back, so use it wisely! Though have fun too, of course!
Wow, fab question! I think I would have taken a year out (or several years out!) before going to university. I went there straight from school and I don’t think that was right for me. I wasn’t that bothered about learning and was more interested in going out and having fun so I didn’t put as much into it as I should! When I went back to uni later I tried much harder and as I’ve got older, I’ve found it more and more interesting, and put more into it and got more back! So I kind of regret not just travelling or working when I finished school, but in the end, although I did things in a roundabout way it’s got me where I am now so I guess it all worked out pretty well 😉
