      The other day _ was squeezing an explosive – this was interesting as we discovered a new phase and structure of the material we were squeezing

      A really recent one was putting a common rock that you can find easily on the surface of the Earth, put it under 6000 times the atmospheric pressure and 1000°C and recover it with the atoms in a totally different position! (I needed them that way for another experiment that I have yet to perform!)
