Yes, I have met many of my closest friends through science! I very rarely feel like a scientist will be judgemental, as we prefer to rely on facts than personal opinion. Most of the scientists I know as some of the kindest people in the world, and our global community in solar physics is very close.
I’ve always felt really welcomed in science, since my university years.
The friendship that I made in my B.Sc. and M.Sc. are still strong and long-lasting even with distance and the difficulties of keeping constantly in touch. Now in my PhD I managed to make friends at school and conferences even with just a few days together and we keep each others posted on the events we are attending so that we can meet again!
Other than that, most of my professors and the PhDs, researchers and established professionals in the field that I met were always open to discussions. The nice thing about a science environment is that you bring your work with you to open a conversation, and regardless of your being in the field for 1 or 40 years, or being the youngest in the room, what you’ve got to say to contribute to the conversation will matter!
