To be honest, it probably wasn’t until I started my job! I knew I always wanted to do something practical and research related, and found this job title in ‘Specialist Technology & Research’ in an Engineering company building real life projects – and it seemed perfect!
I think when it comes to finding out what you want to do for a living there’s 3 things:
1) Have a proper think about what you want to (e.g. for me building things that I could see and feel, then do some kind of research promoting scientific knowledge).
2) Research into what jobs might bring you that (I narrowed down to structural/mechanical/medical engineering, academic research or technology consulting)
after this…
3) There might still be many options (as there were for me) so you might just have to jump in and try out a few things before you find it!
I have to admit, I think I am still on a path of finding ‘exactly’ what I want to do for a living. I’ve been working for just under 2 years, and am still trying to find my specialty and what I want to be an expert in 🙂
