Hi! Plasma is a state of matter, just like solids, liquids and gases, but we tend not to hear about plasmas as much because we don’t see them as often in day to day life.

A plasma is kind of like a gas, but it’s so hot that the atoms which make up the gas have been broken apart! Atoms are made of a nucleus (which is made of protons and neutrons), and electrons that surround the nucleus. When a gas gets extremely hot, these electrons can be torn apart from the nucleus, leaving us with a mixture of nuclei and electrons. This is what we call a ‘plasma’.

One example of a plasma is a lightning bolt — these heat the air and turn it into a plasma, which causes the bright flash that we see when a lightning bolt strikes. I hope this helps!
