There are many simple ways that people can be born blind or become blind or have vision problems naturally later on in life. Genetic reasons, injuries, infections, even nutritional problems early in life. Apparently there are 39 million blind people in the world, but there are also more people who have trouble seeing, or people (like me) who need glasses or contact lenses to see properly.

We see things by our brain interpreting signals from cells called rods and cones on the retina in our eyes which detect light. People are blind when something goes wrong in this process. For example, cataracts can prevent your eye being transparent, so the rods and cones cannot detect light. There can also be issues with the optic nerve which transmits signals from the eye to the brain.

It could also be not wearing the appropriate protective equipment. I work with lasers powerful enough to make us blind so if visitors or myself don’t wear goggles, the laser could easily make us blind! Other than that, old age and accidents could also do it.
