We take a lot of precautions to make sure that we are very safe. A lot of the time we don’t actually work with things that are radioactive because that’s only one challenge of a nuclear reactor, the really high temperatures (hotter than the sun) can cause more problems than radiation for materials.
When we do work with radioactive materials, we use samples that are as small as possible to limit our radiation dose and sometimes we don’t even hold our samples, we get robots to handle them for us.
As much as it is to drive a car.
Imagine… when you drive, you have at hand an instrument filled with about 40L of highly flammable liquid, that you can propels at speeds up to 100 miles/hrs, that can thus create massive damages.
A nuclear facility is similar. if it is well regulated, and if people learn how to use it and maintain it appropriately, it is alright.
