The first planets to be known where mercury, venus, mars, jupiter and saturn and they were named after the roman gods of mercury (trading), venus (beauty), mars (war), jupiter (he was the main god for the romans, like zeus for the greek culture) and saturn (god of agriculture).
They where discovered by Galileo Galilei however previous cultures noticed that there was a difference in the sky between stars and some objects they name as planets, which meaning is “wanderer”. The word was originally applied to any of seven visible celestial bodies which appeared to move independently of the fixed stars
