Lighting is an electric discharge from clouds. When objects are rubbed against each other electrons can be transferred.
You can make some discharges at home. Just rub a piece of plastic (a balloon or a ruler) against some cloth made out of wool or polyester. You will see that it starts to get charged and might attract small pieces of paper. If you switch of the light you might then observe a discharge!
