This is a big, complicated problem that affects everything that humans do. The biggest thing is stopping using “fossil fuels”, or fuel that has been underground for millions of years. Burning it releases a lot of CO2 and this makes it easier for the atmosphere to trap heat from sunlight. We need some CO2 to keep our atmosphere at the right temperature, but too much will have very bad effects on life on Earth. We also need to ideally remove some of this CO2 from the atmosphere, or find some other way to balance the heating effect that it has. The atmosphere and oceans are very complicated, and once you start heating up the atmosphere, many different things go wrong and it can be hard to get things back to the way they were. This is why it is so important to stop it now before it gets worse.

The problem of climate change is partly technical, but mostly political. We should develop new technologies to make clean energy easier and make better trains to replace cars and planes, but simple things like bicycles and electric trams have existed for a hundred years. Companies that sell fossil fuels are very powerful, and often make a lot of jobs in some places, so we need to come together to make sure these changes happen soon and help everyone. This will need us to think in new ways – we can’t make things go back to the way they were 10 or 20 years ago. Young people will be very important in this – school students lead a lot of climate protests and have a big interest in what happens in the future. There are a lot of ideas you can find on the internet – for example, this video looks at how we could change a British town to be more green and better for people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD1kzbgaf8U
