Rainbows are caused by light being refracted (broken up) by water droplets in the sky. The white light from the sun is split in to different colours because the different colours travel at different speeds in the water. You can see this in a classroom experiment if you shine white light in to a glass prism. Maybe ask your teacher to show you or google ‘prism light experiment’.
