Not since young, no. My dream job changed a few times while I was growing up. Different subjects at school an later at university made me get a better idea of what I like to do and what I don’t. I think that is quite normal and happens to most of the people.
Not really. I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I finished school and even after that I kept changing my mind a bit and exploring different areas of science. I was always interested in science but I also had many other ineterests and it was hard to know what job I would enjoy. Science itself is very broad – I do something very different to Mick or Filipe and all of us are scientists. When I first started uni I was studying chemistry. But I worked on different projects since then and now I work in a molecular biology lab. So things can change over the years and it’s ok to not be sure what you’d like to do straight away.
When I was very young, I didn’t know whether to be a doctor or a scientist, so I decided that I wanted to do a job that was a mix of the two – a geneticist (someone who studies DNA)! Of course, people change their minds many times before they settle on a job, and I did the same thing. Later, I wanted to be a palaeontologist (dinosaur scientist), a dentist, a forensic scientist (someone who helps to solve crimes), a writer, and a lot of other things.
Finally, I got a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology. To get that, I worked in a lab studying how our DNA works. Humans have lots of DNA, and it has to squash down very small to fit into our tiny cells. I studied how that works and found out some interesting new things about how we make all of that DNA fit (and how we get it back open again when we need it).
Now, I write about science and medicine (in fact, I often write about the exact kind of work that people like Natalia and Filipe are doing) – and I think this is my dream job! It lets me learn all about different kinds of science, but it also lets me write, which is another of my favourite things. There’s room in science for everyone, even writers and artists and musicians!
