It might be possible! We already can do that, sometimes – that’s basically what resuscitation is. You’ve probably seen it on tv hospital dramas, where they get two electrodes, put them on someone’s chest and yell “CLEAR!” This helps get their heart going when it may have stopped beating properly. This sort of treatment is only useful for a few minutes after the heart is stopped, though – and I’m guessing you’re thinking maybe people who’ve been dead for longer?
There are a few problems – for example, your body will begin to decay once you’ve died, so even if you get revived there might be problems if your hand is trying to rot off! In addition, why did you die in the first place? It was probably for a good reason – something like an illness or an injury. If we brought you back to life we’d have to fix that injury or you’d probably just die again.
I’ve heard that there are some people who arrange to get their body frozen – or maybe just their head – so that if someone ever figures out how to fix what is wrong with them, they can be revived some day. I’m not sure how common that is, but it’s a pretty cool idea.
Yo makes a great point about resuscitation being like coming back from death, but once a person’s properly dead I don’t think it’ll ever be possible to bring them back to life – their cells will have been broken down and the chemicals that make them up will have been reused by other things. (That can feel pretty rubbish if someone you love passes away, but I reckon they come back to life a little bit in people’s minds and memories every time you remember them or talk about them. So that’s good to know.)
