• Question: Do you like big bang theory

      I wondered if we’d be asked this! The Big Bang Theory is kind of funny sometimes, but it promotes a lot of stereotypes that really aren’t funny, with standoffish mean scientists and women hating comics and star wars. I wouldn’t want to work in a lab with almost any of the characters on the show – they’re too mean too often! Teamwork is important no matter where you work and scientists aren’t exempt.
      I also don’t like scenes where Amy is working on a brain and has her sandwich right beside it. Apart from the “ew” factor, she risks spoiling the experiment AND her food. I work in a biology building, but the lab is one on side of the building and separated by two doors from the area where we use our computers and keep our food. They should always be separate!

      I don’t really watch it to be honest – I don’t find it particularly funny, and it definitely doesn’t make me laugh like the laughter track that’s played after the jokes! Yo makes some very good points about stereotyping as well – obviously it’s supposed to be a comedy and not taken very seriously, but sometimes people unintentionally take these things on board and assume it’s how things are, or are supposed to be. That ain’t cool.

      I really, really, really dislike it.I have a few of the same reasons Yo and Oli listed for disliking it.

      However, I’m not super against it? I don’t HATE it. It can actually be kind of helpful? Sometimes I will talk to people who don’t do science, and they’ll reference The Big Bang Theory show, so it can be a helpful starting point. It does introduce people to science a little bit, or at least the idea of science.

      But mostly I just don’t find it funny! This video is a good example of how I feel when watching it, and the laugh track is going on for something that just doesn’t actually seem to be a joke.
