I’ve just been watching Stranger Things and Voltron, so this question immediately makes me think about alternative dimensions and realities. If we’re talking about alternative dimensions, like that of parallel universes, then I have no idea how we would detect them. If they have no effect on us and we have no effect on them, how would we interact with them? But they’re definitely fun to think about!
In physics, we often talk about dimensions as something which that describes a point in space. In our everyday lives, we often experience three dimensions in space (3D), and the fourth of time. So when we’re talking about higher dimensions, we’re sort of talking about more creative descriptions. This can lead to fun discussions, like whether gravity is so weak because its full force is in an extra dimension. If we were to test for these extra dimensions, we would have to test things that would only happen/exist for these extra dimensions.
CERN has some nice articles on subjects like this, you should definitely check them out!
