That it’s very complex! I’ve been trying to figure out how protein “mis-behaving” and sticking together can cause damage in diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Since it’s not all the protein (less than 1% of all the protein in fact), it’s quite hard to observe. I have been working on techniques that could let me take a closer look – a special microscope & molecular labels. Using these, I’m hoping to figure out how the protein can form “clumps”, what are the different types of clumps and how that affects the brain. In the meantime, I’ve also been learning from the experts! There is a few research groups at my university studying the brain and its diseases, and I get to join their online meetings and learn what they are working on. There is many different cell types within the brain and more than one thing can go wrong to lead to a disease, so it’s important to try and figure out why these things happen, if there is any interactions and what happens first.
