Writing reports (English). Analysing data (maths). Creative thinking (science, art, design). Speaking and reading in a different language (languages). Teamwork (PE and group projects)

I think that a lot of school isn’t about you becoming an expert in a specific subject, but about learning a huge range of skills which can be used in the future.

I think that the so-called “soft” skills are the most useful ones: working as part of a team, time management, and communication (both oral and written), just to name three.

Listening – I spend 30% of my time in meetings. The key to meetings is listening and understanding what people are saying without actually them saying it. The World since Covid has changed considerably, mostly meaning for me that my meetings are often virtual, rather than in person. This makes it difficult to read peoples body language and also know if someone is trying to say something.
Always ask a question if you don’t know something – I work with many great minds, and it’s always good to be humble and tell someone if you don’t understand what they’ve said or you need them to explain what they are talking about.
Every day is a learning day – and you can learn just as much from your peers and people younger than you, as well as you seniors.
