John Grasmeder answered on 14 Jun 2023:
A couple of examples….I am a chemist. In the lab, we follow methods to make chemicals and materials, (or invent new ones) to make new chemicals and materials. At home, I do the same in the kitchen when I am cooking.
At work I solve problems, sometimes on my own, or sometimes with help from colleagues or customers. At home I use the same analytical skills when something breaks to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. Sometimes I can fix it myself, sometimes I need someone to help, like a plumber.

Problem solving & organization are the things I use the most. My work has helped me break down problems into manageable chunks, which is helpful everywhere. Lab work is also quite a lot like cooking- both in terms of organization and in terms of getting good at using your hands!

i use the same planning routine in the lab for planning and carrying out analysis of samples at home in many things
especially cooking and following recipes
but also planning my day

In my job I have to quickly collect information to make a recommendation on how to solve problems. I use the same techniques to win arguments with my family – my parents hate it!
And like Sharron says, chemistry = cookery

An easy question to answer.
As part of my job (I design buildings) I draw the proposed building 3D software (it ends up looking a bit like a Minecraft building). I then use this model to understand how the Sun affects internal temperatures and trying to create buildings that don’t require air conditioning and can use natural ventilation instead.
Because of this, I have learnt that shutting windows and closing blinds and curtains during the day can help keep my house my cooler than if I opened my windows all day. I now live in a much cooler house.
Don’t open windows when the outside temperature is warmer than the inside temperature. Use a fan to move air around instead.
Also my job makes me pretty good at creating spreadsheets, that I now use for my personal life!! -

I think the time management skills I have developed in my job really help me in my day to day life.

I use most of my skills most days, whether it’s explaining complex scientific concepts to non-experts, or planning/doing complicated experiments in the lab.

I definitely use my communication skills and problem solving in everyday life. I think I also can interogate the information I recieve better with a more evidence-based criticla thinking. When you hear news stories making claims about health risks or claims with spurious statistics I think I am better able to appraise them and work out what is really going on.
