I think batteries will certainly still be important in 20 years. But especially for those working at universities I think it is important to keep looking for new challenges in other areas.
Yes, I am an electrical engineer and I work in offshore wind sector. Both electrical engineering and offshore wind sector improve day by day. So, I believe even in 20 years, the industry I work at will be important, it might not look like what it is now but that is to be expected in STEM field.
I work in solar cells, so I think as a whole they will definitely be important, but my exact work may change. I work on a special new type of solar cell that might never make it to market, so I might end up working on something slightly different- like recycling normal solar cells.
I work in building/construction design, I help my Clients use less resources and reduce their carbon footprint.
People are always going to need buildings, and therefore I’d hope that my role in future will be to help people improve existing buildings and reduce their energy usage, rather than knock down old buildings and start again.

Every industry evolves, so I’m sure my job will be different in 20 years time.
I calculate environmental impacts of products and processes. It is the environmental equivalent of financial audits. I’m sure that many companies will still need to understand what their impacts are and where they should focus their efforts to improve. But it might be more automated.
I don’t know what I would do next. Possibly something that doesn’t currently exist? Probably still in the world of sustainability because the topic interests me so much.
Yes, it will still be important. Even if owning a car is not allowed in the future, my industry will adapt and work more on public transport vehicles and self driving cars.
