I think as any area of science develops, new careers will come up. At present, there are new careers in science especially in the areas of sustainability, recycling and “data science” which is doing experiment in computers rather than in laboratories. This is called “computational chemistry” (doing chemistry in the computer) which can be quicker and safer than doing it in the lab.
We really need more ‘Sustainability Engineers’. They have knowledge of carbon footprints, building construction and heating and electrics. They are needed to help people design Buildings that are better for the environment with the technology available and advise the consequences of changing fuels, insulating walls and roofs and better controlling energy using equipment.
Lots and lots. I saw in the news this week that 1/3 of current jobs on offer are in the Green Industries.
There are not enough people with experience in calculating carbon footprints (my job), so there are lots of jobs available.
And I’m sure in 5 years time there will be new jobs in topics which don’t currently exist as science and technology evolve.
All the time – Hydrogen Technologies are rapidly growing area of research and development and we are always on the lookout for more scientists and engineers!
Yes, one of the most important fields that is still struggling to grow is software development for vehicles. The next few years are really important and there will be a lot of new jobs created that don’t exist yet, for example working on the camera system that helps self driving cars and trucks become safer and more efficient
Yes! There is a lot of demand in my field for bioinformaticians, who can analyse big biological data sets using high-powered computers and coding
I think jobs where there is overlap between different fields will always be emerging
