Yes, I am contracted to work 7.5 hours a day but I can assure that I exceed this on daily basis in order to get the work done. In most cases when you get a certain level in the organisation, you will no longer be entitled to over-time; so you will do some of these additional hours in your own time.
My contract is 8 hours per day for 4 days per week. But it does vary, as long as I average at least 32 hours per week. Sometimes I’m really engrossed in a problem, so I work longer. Sometimes I’m tired and am just making silly mistakes, so I finish a bit earlier.
Travel is always the challenging one. Flights are rarely during working hours, so those are longer days. But it means that if I need to go to the dentist for example I can do that during work hours and not feel guilty.
As with most employers I have a contract that says how many hours a day and days a week I am supposed to work, and if I want to take any time off I am supposed to book it from a limited number of days of leave. However, in research it’s quite normal to sometimes work more than your hours, and therefore it’s ok to sometimes work less if you need to take some time for yourself. As most workers are turning up each day because they are interested in finding solutions to big environmental problems, there’s a lot of understanding when it comes to taking time off or working flexibly. It’s one of the things I like about the job!
