About Me:
Hi!
I’m Jane, currently based in Glasgow! But have lived (and/or worked) in 4 different continents. I love travelling and sea activities. In fact I love the ocean so much I do research around ocean energy! I also have a pet tortoise who is now 3 years old and he is lot faster than you’d imagine. His name is Thelathini!

My Work:
I’m currently undertaking a doctorate in Engineering. My work focuses on research and development of ocean energy harvesting devices. I am also a former subsea engineer in offshore oil and gas and have been transitioning into renewables over the past 2 years.
-
My Typical Day:
A typical day now looks a lot different than 2 years ago working on an oil rig offshore. I may not start my days with a dose of harsh north sea air hitting my face, instead, I start off with emails at 9am and address as many as I can within my first hour.
I then follow a pretty streamlined routine of collating research papers and new online articles (also via online alerts). I read and write summaries taking note of any new significant information to do with my work and area of research.
I reserve afternoons for running simulations and in the future – experimental work. With access to labs (for example the hydrodynamics lab), we can test devices in simulated ocean responses and then study the devices behaviors.
In-between attending meetings, there are plenty of opportunities to meet with colleagues for various events such as departmental lunches.

What I'd do with the prize money:
As I am currently developing a device – I would hope to be able to demonstrate it’s working behaviors and would probably use the prize to travel to remote Orkney / Scottish isles where ocean studies are particularly important and showcase research to rural students there.
