Working in industry, there is always a question about whether I will stay in a job, especially when there is a recession and the business is not doing well (like now!). When sales and profits fall, it is normal for industrial companies to reduce the number of employees, to make people redundant. Some scientists are very specialised in what they do, so that means finding another job can be quite tricky.
Sometimes I have to survey rooftops of some very high buildings, which when it’s windy can feel a little physically scary – however I am hooked to lots of safety equipment so I’m actually fine.
Another way a job can be scary is when trying something new and untested is always a little daunting.
Sometimes I have to use very expensive of very hazardous chemicals, but that is part of why I am working to figure out how to make best use of the materials we have available
There is a scary side to our job if we are not careful. There are so many accidents that can happen if you are carless. We need to pay attention to the smallest detail
Meeting and working with new people. It is a big part of my job as I am a consultant. But the first meeting is always a little bit scary: will they be nice? Do they have unrealistic expectations of what I can do for them? Will i be able to explain things in a way that they understand?
