About Me:
I live in Didcot in Oxfordshire having grown up near Penzance in West Cornwall. I am a fusion energy research scientist now, but before that I worked as a geologist.

I love the outdoors, hiking in the mountains, swimming in the sea and looking at the night sky through my telescope and trying to take photos of it. I have also taken up archery recently. I enjoy reading fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings, Game of Throne, the Mistborn Trilogy and my favourite author is Robin Hobb.

My Work:
I now work in fusion energy research. This involves using computers and artificial intelligence to understand how to build a fusion reactor. Before that I worked as a geologist analysing rocks and data to understand what is going on kilometres beneath our feet.

Fusion is the process that takes place in the heart of stars and provides the power that drives the universe. I work on trying to help make that happen on the Earth so we have a cleaner energy source.
To produce energy from fusion here on Earth, a combination of hydrogen gases – deuterium and tritium – are heated to very high temperatures (over 100 million degrees Celsius). The gas becomes a plasma and the nuclei combine to form a helium nucleus and a neutron, with a tiny fraction of the mass converted into ‘fusion’ energy. A plasma with millions of these reactions every second can provide a huge amount of energy from very small amounts of fuel.
One way to control the intensely hot plasma is to use powerful magnets. The most advanced device for this is the ‘tokamak’, a Russian word for a ring-shaped magnetic chamber.

My Typical Day:
I usually get up around 7am and after breakfast (and if the weather is nice) I cycle to the site where we do the fusion research. I do a lot of work with computers and have lunch with my friends at the canteen. I usually go home about 4pm and spend time with my family.

Some days I work in the control room of the JET tokamak where we do experiments on how to control the plasma in the device. Most of my time is spent analysing the data from these experiments and trying to use Machine Learning techniques (which is where computers learn from data how to do something without being programmed to do it) to allow the computers to control the fusion device at much faster speeds than a human can.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I was to win the prize money I would use it to allow more schools to visit our site so that they can have a tour of the JET tokamak fusion device, see the control room and learn about fusion energy and the amazing impact it could have on our planet.

Education:
I went to Mounts Bay secondary school in Penzance, Cornwall where I did my GCSE’s. I then did my A Levels in Maths, Geology, and Chemistry at Penwith college.
I went to first to Leicester to study geology and then to Imperial College in London.
When I wanted to change careers I went back to University of Bath and did an MSc in Data Science.
-
Qualifications:
I have 9 GCSE’s of C’s and B’s. And one D and one E.
I have 3 A levels and 1 AS Level
A BSc from the University of Leicester, and a MSc from Imperial College both in Geology.
And most recently I have a MSc from the University of Bath in Data Science.
-
Work History:
My first job when I was studying my A Levels was as a sales assistant in Curry’s.
My first job after University was as a Geologist working on the oil rigs in Vietnam.
I then moved back to the UK work work an office based job as a geologist in North Wales and then after that for a Swedish company with an Office in London.
