Well I have had to work hard sometimes, but I really enjoy what I do so I don’t mind too much. Also, because I can decide myself what I do each day, it’s easier to manage when things get harder.

It has been quite hard, though I have always enjoyed science, so a lot of the time I haven’t even thought about it as work. But yes, I worked pretty hard at school and then at University.

Yes, It has been hard work to get to where I am now, especially during my PhD. However, it has been a lot of fun! I think to suceed in anything, you need to be prepared to work hard, but you must also balance that with enjoying your life as well!

Yes! But fun work… I did 3 years at university then another 4 at another university and then an internship (summer studentship). And now here I am!

In a way it was. You need to work pretty hard at school and University to become a scientist. Even if you don’t get the best grades, you need to be able to work steadily and systematically. In a way being able to think very clearly and explain things, and being very curious about how things work is probably more important than “intelligence” or good grades. But, if something is a bit hard then you feel even better about finishing it well and it’s good to be challenged and push yourself.
