Most of the time I love it! Sometimes things get a bit harder, but I don’t think there are many jobs that are fun all the time.

Yes! It’s a great job. Working at a university gives me a lot of freedom (e.g. I can take part in things like this if I want to) and a lot of variety. Some days I will teach a class to the students studying here, others I will work on some research project, other times I will go out to see our students who are on a placement working at a company, other times I’ll go away to a conference to see other people working in nuclear physics… I could go on and on. There’s a certain amount of bureaucracy to do to, which is less fun, but my main administrative task at the moment is looking after the admission process, which is actually quite good fun. I get to meet all the applicants who have applied from schools and that’s nice – lots of different people to talk to.

Yes I do – a lot. I used to work in a lab (a proper scientist wearing a lab coat) but I found that a bit lonely – everyone works on their own projects and also I used to get really fed up with experiments that didn’t work! Now, I get to read about other people’s experiments and talk about those results with lots of other analysts (that’s what my job title is – an analyst) – I really enjoy bouncing ideas off other people and enjoy working as a team so it suits me well…

The other great thing about my job is you get to see what drugs are going to make a difference in people’s lives before they come on the market – I love that: it’s a really positive job. No matter how many horrid diseases are out there, you can see that there are drugs in clinical trials that are really going to make a difference once they go on sale… and that’s a great thing to be a part of…

Love it! The best thing is being able to work on really interesting problems and teaching can be fun, especially when the students start to enjoy building their own programs. The worst thing is having to fill in lots of forms, but thankfully there aren’t too many of those.
