People often say it is better to be able to do both. If you work in a team, the people need to be able to work well together to get the job done. In my job, we have a good team of scientists, and the job would be very difficult to do on my own. I’d need six pairs of hands, and lots of energy to do it by myself!
Sometimes it is good to work on your own, especially when writing as you can work faster. It is not safe to work on a beach on my own just in case something happens to me!
I am part of a team of bone scientists and definitely agree with Lauren that teamwork has its ups and downs. The up-side is that you can combine your efforts and find out a lot of interesting facts simply by sharing your individual discoveries and trying to compare and contrast them. You need to balance ‘team time’ with independent work, though – because if you don’t spend enough time researching alone, you’re not going to have enough to say when you meet your team!
A balance of the two is probably what works out to be the most efficient system. 😉
