Many possible reasons, but a common feature is usually swelling of the blood vessels in our brain (called vasodilation), which may be caused by high blood pressure. When these blood vessels expand, they press on certain parts of the brain that cause pain. This pain is what we call the headache. If it presses on a nerve, it can cause serious headaches – sometimes called cluster headaches, and it can also cause migraines. In the worst case, you can get something called neuralgia, which is where certain nerves get pressed, causing widespread pain across the face and eyes.
