I am a Physicist. There are many types of Physicists, who study different things spanning from the very big (cosmologists) to the very small (quantum physics). I am specialised in quantum physics. Science itself is largely split into two parts, which are pure and applied sciences. And of the two types of science, there are two further types: experimental and theoretical/computational science. University has three types of degrees – the first one is called a Bachelor’s degree, the second is a Master’s degree and the last (highest) degree is called a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The first takes three years, then an additional year is required for a Master’s, and finally at least three years is generally required for a PhD.
I studied Physics and Maths for four years, which gave me a Master’s degree. Then I did another four years to get my PhD in Materials Science, which is one field in which Physics is applied. My work was theoretical, so I used computers to predict what hydrogen does to iron (it makes it more easy to break), and whether magnetism makes the iron break more easily in the presence of hydrogen.
