• Question: What is you work environment like?

      Best answer is busy! I work in an open plan office with lots of other scientists, have mobile laboratories all over the south east of England and work in some special environments like constructions sites, waste transfer stations and in tunnels…

      I have my own office, so it’s pretty nice and quiet, but often I’m out and about in meetings or doing field work. A lot of scientists work in labs, but you won’t find me in a lab very often… I’m much more comfortable outside!

      I work in a very busy open plan office, with lots of my colleagues that include mechanical and electrical engineers, ecologists, archaeologists, environmental scientists, flood and river engineers, Civil and structural engineers.

      Currently we all have our world cup team flags on our desks so its much brighter and cheerful than usual – I have Mexico!

      Definitely there’s lots going on around me! People are always working hard on their project work. There are occasional discussions about making the environment more friendly, which I like to hear.

      I would like to say it is a professional environment but it really isn’t. My main office is open plan and there is lots of immature behaviour but it is fun! My office on site can be very cold and it is very basic.

      I think I’m a bit spoiled, as I have a nice large office, with a peaceful view of the rural south oxfordshire landscape. The building I’m in has 240 people and includes many offices and a large new laboratory building. We also have several meeting rooms, which are always busy! We have students, staff scientists, visiting scientists and ‘infrastructure’ which are the people that allow the science to happen. Although everyone is very busy, it’s quite a peaceful place to work.
