As a small child I watched a lot of nature documentaries on the (black and white) television and was always fascinated by the amazing places, animals and fossils that the presenter (mainly David Attenborough) found… this left me wanting to explore the world and discover new stuff for myself!

I asked lots of questions as a child, and was really interested in animals and wildlife. I enjoyed studying biology in school, but it was when I went to university that I really got to study things I loved (like animal behaviour and ecology).

Breaking things and finding out how things worked as a child would definitely be it! I would bend pieces of plastic to see how far they would bend. Now I’d call that finding its ultimate tensile strength. These small discoveries were important to get me into science.

I was motivated by leaders such as Rachel Carson’s book: Silent Spring, as well as ground-breaking scientists like Jane Goodall. I received a letter from Jane Goodall when I was in primary school and it really stuck with me–the importance of conservation. It wasn’t until I was much older that a career in science took shape, but it was these early influences which were important!

I have always been interesting in solving problems so being a scientist always seemed like a great way to do it
