I started working as a scientist in 1996 and it was quite soon after finishing university so you could say that I was a professional from then but really it takes many years of research to become a leading professional in any area of science and you are still always learning.

I guess I’d have considered myself a professional after my PhD (as that was the first time I felt like an expert in a field). I was 27 at that point, and already had an MSc and a BSc. To be honest though I’m always learning something new!
