There are many reasons why dogs lick their noses: 1) Dogs have a huge number of scent receptors at their nose, which enable them to recognize thousands of different smells. When they wander around sniffing at different things, they tend to pick up moisture, grass and other things on their nose. Licking their nose helps them remove these things and clean their nose from previous smells. 2) Dogs lick their noses when they feel unsure or uncomfortable and they want to calm themselves down or/and calm humans or other dogs down. 3) The only way that dogs can regulate their body temperature is through their mouth and nose (they don’t sweat like us). You might have seen dogs during a very hot day panting heavily. They lick their nose regularly to keep it cold and wet.
