Humans need sleep to keep us healthy and functioning. It also allows our brain to re-energize which allows us to function the next day. In children, sleep also helps growth and development!

When I was a student, I used to spend days and nights studying. But the time always came when I couldn’t do it anymore, I had to sleep. I always went to sleep panicky, I felt like I couldn’t remember anything…but then I woke up and it was all there, clear as light! I remembered everything. This is one of the reasons why we need sleep: it helps us remembering important things. We need to sleep also because our bodies need to repair and our brains need to regain energy, and this all happens when we sleep. People that spend a long time without sleeping enough, might actually get quite unwell.
Most grown ups need around 7-9 hours of sleep per night, but when we are younger we need much more sleep. For example, a newborn baby might sleep as long as 17 hours a day! And that is because sleep at that age is linked to development; so maybe I am not wrong when I say my son gets bigger every morning I pick him up from his bed!

Sleep plays an essential role in how your body and brain functions. Even the way you feel in the morning and through the day when you’re awake depends on how well you’ve slept. Sleep is an absolutely fascinating subject that I’m still learning about till this date! I’ve been reading a very popular book called “Why we sleep” by Mathew Walker and I’d 100% recommend it.
