I chose to study biochemistry as I enjoyed chemistry at school but wanted to apply these concepts to biological or medical systems. I really enjoyed practical classes at school and still enjoy most aspects of lab work!
My PhD involved the study of molecules that bind to enzymes (which are proteins). This is similar to the way molecules from viruses bind to antibodies (also proteins). I was always interested in the ‘arms race’ between our immune system and pathogenic microorganisms, so it was a natural step for me to use the skills I acquired as part of my PhD, to develop new diagnostic tests for infectious diseases based on measuring our antibody responses to infection.
