There were times, especially when a fingerprint match would come up on the computer that only me and the criminal knew that they had committed it, which is quite exciting.

This happens often. Usually, facial composites are used in serious criminal cases and modern software systems such as EvoFIT allow eyewitnesses to create a face that has a very good chance of being identified. If someone names a composite to the police, then an investigation can established whether or not this person is likely to have committed the offence in question.
